Volunteer & Community Relations Manager
Hourly Pay Rate: $20.00 – $25.00
Supervisor: Chief Executive Officer
Work hours: Full-time – May include weekends and some holidays depending on shelter needs; Approximately 40 hours per week.
Position Summary
The Humane Society of Delaware County (HSDC) is seeking an energetic, organized, and community-minded Volunteer & Community Relations Manager to lead our volunteer program and help strengthen our connection with the community.
This position is responsible for recruiting, training, scheduling, and supporting volunteers across all areas of the shelter, including animal care, events, and administrative support. The role will also coordinate a limited number of community events and outreach opportunities each year that build awareness, engage supporters, and advance HSDC’s mission. The ideal candidate is a relationship builder who enjoys working with people, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and believes volunteers are essential partners in animal welfare.
Key Responsibilities
Volunteer Program Management (70%)
- Recruit, onboard, and train new volunteers.
- Maintain volunteer applications, records, waivers, and training documentation.
- Coordinate volunteer scheduling and assignments across shelter departments.
- Partner with department managers to identify volunteer needs and opportunities.
- Ensure volunteers receive appropriate orientation, ongoing training, and support.
- Recognize and celebrate volunteer contributions through appreciation events, communications, and recognition programs.
- Monitor volunteer performance and address concerns or conflicts professionally and promptly.
- Develop policies and procedures that create a safe, positive, and engaging volunteer experience.
- Track volunteer hours and prepare reports on volunteer engagement and impact.
Community Relations & Events (20%)
- Coordinate a small number of community events and outreach activities annually, including fundraisers, adoption events, and educational programs.
- Represent HSDC at community meetings, fairs, and partner events as needed.
- Build relationships with local businesses, schools, civic organizations, and community groups.
- Assist with social media content and storytelling related to volunteers, events, and community impact.
Administrative & Team Support (10%)
- Maintain accurate volunteer and event records in HSDC systems.
- Track, analyze, and report key volunteer and community engagement metrics, using data to improve programs, measure impact, and support organizational goals.
- Assist with donor acknowledgements and community communications as needed.
- Participate in staff meetings and support organizational initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in nonprofit management, volunteer coordination, community engagement, communications, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience managing volunteers, coordinating events, or working in community relations.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with volunteers, staff, donors, and community partners.
- Experience with volunteer management software or donor databases is a plus.
- Passion for animal welfare and commitment to HSDC’s mission.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk throughout the shelter and stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to work around animals of varying sizes, temperaments, and activity levels.
- Ability to occasionally work evenings or weekends for events or volunteer activities.
- Work is performed in an animal shelter. There is a potential for exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations, high noise levels, zoonotic diseases, animal waste, hazardous chemicals or chemical materials requiring OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets, anesthetics, sharp objects, and potential hostile persons and/or dangerous and fractious animals.
