Our History and ServicesThe Humane Society of Delaware County (HSDC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving and protecting the animals of Delaware County, Ohio. We come from humble beginnings -- our first “animal shelter” was technically run out of a member’s garage. And from that day (in 1972) forward, HSDC has been battling pet overpopulation, abuse, and homelessness. The shelter was built in 1984 so we could better house the animals in a safe and comfortable environment. A few years later, we opened our Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic (one of the first of its kind) so we could make responsible pet ownership affordable to all. Through the years, we’ve added a room here or there, and are currently hoping to expand again. Our dogs are walked and exercised several times a day and truly enjoy the fenced-in play areas. Our cats can pick their own favorite spot in an open and airy community room with an attached outdoor play pen. Our goal is to make “our temporary pets” feel at home until they find their forever home.We do not receive any governmental funding and rely entirely on donations and revenue generated through our programs. We continue to expand our services in order to match the needs of our growing community with our mission to enrich the lives of animals. We now shoulder a much heavier load than when we started over 30 years ago.As you can imagine, rescuing horses takes quite a bit more effort and resources than cats or dogs. Operating low-cost surgery and vaccination clinics for the general public is certainly not a ‘get rich quick’ scheme. Providing follow-up details to anyone who reports a cruelty case takes a fair amount of administrative time. Treating severely injured or sick animals requires more intensive TLC from our staff. And responding to 24-hour animal emergencies for the entire county (yes, even if it’s 3 am) requires a strong commitment...and cup of coffee.HSDC doesn’t have to go the extra mile and offer all of these programs. We choose to do it because, quite simply, the animals need our help. These services would not be possible without the generosity of our donors and corporate sponsors. For your convenience, we’ve described our services below. If you are as passionate about making a difference in the lives of animals as we are, please consider making a donation or becoming a volunteer. Thank you kindly in advance for your support. We truly couldn’t walk that extra mile alone.Donate Directly to Causes You Support MostWhen you donate to any of these special funds, you know exactly where your hard-earned money is going.
